Module 1: Past and Present Verb Conjugation

Stage 3 moves learners from survival phrases to active communication. Egyptian Arabic verbs are built from three-letter roots. Here we use the root ك-ت-ب (K-T-B), meaning to write.

1. Present Tense (Bi-/Ba- Prefix Rule)

In Egyptian Arabic, active present verbs usually begin with bi- or ba-. This can express habits or actions happening now.

I أَنَا بَاكْتِب Ana b-akteb I write / I am writing.
You (m) إِنْتَ بِتِكْتِب Enta b-tekteb You write.
You (f) إِنْتِي بِتِكْتِبِي Enti b-tektebi You write.
He هُوَّ بِيِكْتِب Howa b-yekteb He writes.
She هِيَّ بِتِكْتِب Heya b-tekteb She writes.
We إِحْنَا بِنِكْتِب Ihna b-nekteb We write.
You all إِنْتُو بِتِكْتِبُو Ento b-tektebu You all write.
They هُمَّ بِيِكْتِبُو Homma b-yektebu They write.

2. Past Tense (Suffix Rule)

For the past, drop present prefixes and add endings directly to the stem كَتَب (katab).
